U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps - FAQ's
Who are we?
* Federally chartered by Congress in 1962 (Public Law 87-655)
* Non-profit youth training and education organization (Ages 11 - 17)
* Supported by the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard, sponsored by the Navy League of the United States.
* Our program is directed toward development of young American men and women.
* Promotes interest and skills in seamanship and aviation.
* Instills in every Cadet a sense of patriotism, courage, self-reliance, confidence.
* Builds those qualities which mold strong moral character and self discipline.
Who pays for the Program?
* Cadets pay for all program expenses, including travel to and from training, insurance, and uniforms.
* Out of pocket expenses can reach $400 - $ 500 per Cadet each year.
* Scholarships and assistance are made available, funds permitting.
* Funding assistance is provided through sponsors and local fund raising activities.
* Funded annually by the Defense Appropriations Bill (O&M Navy, Title II, Budget Activity 3).
* Title II funds are used to offset individual costs for summer training, conduct background checks on adult
volunteers and reducing enrollment costs for Cadets.
* Operating funds come primarily from the NLUS, CFC and individual contributions.
What training do Cadets receive?
* I nitial 2 - Week recruit training "Boot Camp."
* Drill one day per week; follow-on training each summer aboard Navy, Coast Guard and USNSCC ships.
* Additional training is conducted at Navy, Marine and Army shore facilities.
* This past year, Cadets trained in 27 career fields; aviation, fire fighting and emergency services, legal
services,master-at-arms, medical, music, SEABEE, amphibious, SEALs, ceremonial guard, mine warfare,
SAR, submarines, seamanship, Coast Guard (Including Barque Eagle), Petty Officer Leadership, sailing,
scuba diving, survival, Honor Guards, cooking/steward, military vehicle maintenance, engineering, military
photography, mine warfare and EOD. There is also an international exchange program with other countries
having Naval Sea Cadet Corps programs.
* Cadets complete USN Enlisted Correspondence courses, graded by the Navy.
* Credit is given to Cadets who enlist in the Navy and Coast Guard - who promote recruits up to two pay
-grades upon boot camp completion based on their Sea Cadet experience.
How do Cadets do after leaving the program?
# The new class of (2010) entering the U.S. Naval Academy in June 2006 had 148 ex-Naval Sea Cadets.
# Approximately 500 Cadets enlist in the Navy and Coast Guard and other services each year.
# All Cadets carry forth learned values of good citizenship and leadership that will benefit our country.
How do we maintain a drug-free environment for our Cadets?
* We provide an active program that is exercised in an environment which provides a peer group that
eliminates those pressures to become involved in drugs.
* Work closely with DEA. Their field agents are an integral part of our entire training program.
* Designated a DEA Prevention and Education Resource.
